I have come to enjoy Latakia mixtures for the most part. Latakia in capital letters, but smooth, evenly burning, never to harsh. It rubs out easy but it is messy. This is a top shelf blend worthy of a try by any latakia lover. Totally my own fault : ). The burley is noticeable not so much for the taste but more so the nicotine hit that it helps provide. It comes in a plug which I tore apart and put in an air tight jar, like the large ones sold on this site. Burley provides body, added smoothness and aids in the creamy mouth-feel. I smoked it in two different briar pipes: a medium-sized Orlik Captain Black billiard and a small Orlik pot. Just what I like. Pipe Used: Icarus Stubby Apple, Self-Made Magnum Cherrywood. This is the ultimate Lat-Bomb. The flavor is fairly monotone, and limited to the Latakia. Though not similar in taste, its like nightcap, in the sense of a heavy desert like tobacco, or your last smoke of the day. It is smooth, no harshness at all. I'm paraphrasing here, but I don't have a better description of this aroma. It will definitely do for someone who seeks as much latakia as possible though. $11.25. Used to smoke this semi regularly years ago. I love it. Once the kake is rubbed out sufficiently it does need a little drying time maybe only 30 minutes or so. The strength is mild-med, nic is mild at most. . However, when the mood strikes, Pirate Kake may just hit the spot. The flavors actually varied through out the bowl ranging from smokey to earthy and very lightly sweet. Aaaarrrrrhhhhh. I had it with my morning coffee and when I lick my lips it tastes like there's a sweet creamer in the coffee, which there isn't as I take my coffee like I take my tobacco Black and delicious. I wish there was a more consistent taste throughout on this one. It has a smoked bacon with sharp provolone flavor !!! If Nightcap is Wagnerian, this is a brass band. My loyal first matey collie came in to join me and looked at the smoke and me and joined in for the fun. Having wanted to go for a really heavy blend I decided I'd give it a try. Its just good, kick your taste buds in the butt good, but its good. It is pretty strong, both in nicotine and aroma. I did find drying it out a bit gave the best results and minimized the relights. Very smoky, leathery, and herby. I have carefully read the reviews to get an idea, and I thank everyone for the excellent guidance and advice. I heard burning leaves and campfire from most everyone there. It came at a time of several samples and got stashed away and, well, forgotten about. Smell also stays on your hands for quite some time after rubbing this out. Smokes cool and dry. That is the exact progression I went through smoking Pirate Kake. Words cannot describe how enjoyable a smoke this is. I will keep the 2 lbs. I'm NOT a latakia smoker. I fear that I packed the top third too tightly. The burley and orientals help prevent the Latakia from being completely overpowering. Roasting fish over a campfire I just got this an the first bowl I tried in a briar, just didnt do it justice. The smokey latakia is up front (though I wouldn't consider it a lat bomb), and floral riding shot gun and mildly sweet in the back. This is a Latakia bomb? Absolutely no indication of bite even when puffing vigorously. Remarkable. Lighting up the bowl I was greeted by smoke rolling from the bowl and a rich, heavy, sweet smoke that I found very pleasing and that dominated this smoke. It says it has turkish and burley in there, but the turkish BARELY comes through, and the burley is buried. Glad I gave it a shot and a second try. The taste of salted leather. 60 (PK)/40 (Savinilli English) makes a great all day smoke but PK can certainly stand alone. Its not easy to get over here so Im glad I got some friends overseas who are willing to help out. I didn't find this blend to change much in the bowl. Is almost pure latakia! I will say I like it, a lot but this is not a tobacco that you need to ponder. For me, however, Pirate Kake is nothing short of a ridiculous, unbalanced mess. A favorite for special occasions, definitely not an all day smoke for me. Flavor wise, it's not as strong as one might expect and I'd say the nic level is medium. And this is the blend. The Kake easily breaks apart, easily rubs out. A blast o' latakia smoke and sweetness that never gives quarter. The 099 bag was packed totally full of tobacco, whereas the Pirate Kake was only half full! Very reasonably priced in bulk form; I'm slowly chipping away at a pound of it. Compared to other Latakia-rich mixtures, I found Pirate Kake to be a flavorful yet monochromatic smoke. Being a lover of Penzance, this is just as satisfying and the best Break off a piece of this "dark chocolate" brownie, break it up, and stuff away. I am very glad I did. Caution: it is such an unforgettable smoke, your pipe will keep reminding you of it no matter what else you smoke in it. I've had english blends once or twice for fun but don't really like them. But hey We all need some "Alone Time" now and then. To order by pound, use multiples of 16. If you like a whole lotta Latakia, go for it. Being a Pirate Kake fan I'm starting to love some of the Captain Earle's offerings more and more. If you're a rum and coke drinker, this probably ain't for you. This is a sit down and do nothing else but smoke tobacco. Appearance is a pressed briquette ("krumble kake"), rubs out to a coarse mixture of pieces and ribbon. For the Latkia fan, its a must. So, for me, this blend is rich, smokey, and spicy with the great flavors from the Turkish that mix very well with the Latakia. Burns all the way down and leaves the pipe dry and clean. It has a similar effect of a good Sichuan pepper, a bit of a tingling sensation on the palate. But I wouldn't smoke this on a regular basis. Although the Burley adds body, it's the distinct flavor of Orientals in the mix which makes this blend enjoyable beyond just tasting like a smoky campfire. In any case, after finishing a bowl I often felt sated for quite some time. Pirate Kake may best be utilized as a blending tobacco. Will be ordering a couple lb pound bags next time. I started smoking pipes a couple years ago with those pouches you could get out of stores and nothing against those tobacco are the people that smoke them just thought something was missing I finally found this smoking pipes.com website ordered a tin of nightcap and that was my 1st real true experience with great tinned tobacco and that was my 1st while moment smoking a pipe while now you can't get nightcap anymore and I was looking for that wow again and just happened to pick up a can of pirate cake and this is as close a second to the while that I 1st experienced the nightcap not saying the tobaccos are similar just saying that while factor has to be the 2nd best tobacco that I've ever tried and will order more and more this is just a great smoke everything you could want every feeling every emotion just a great all around smoking tobacco. It was very smoky yet smooth (smelled a bit like a camp fire). This is Latakia heaven, and it is sublime. It is true to its word, but C&D could tinker the blend and do better. The tobacco is not super pressed, its easy to rub and easy to fill your pipe (unlike Seattle Pipe Clubs Plum Pudding). I do enjoy this from time to time, but it is not really that great of an achievment in tobacco blending. A beautifully smokey taste with a sweet background and almost barn sawdust background note that burnt down to the bottom with a beautiful creamy mouthfeel. This not Old Ironsides of any version it may be better to some and not quite as good to others but if you like OI I can't imagine you not liking this stuff. This cake is Very smooth. Pressed tobacco blends are among my favorites for taste and this blend is no exception. The flavor is not very complex; it is quality Latakia center stage, with just enough Burley and Turkish to round out the edges. I appreciate GLP Maltese Falcon and Odissey, that I find more enjoyable and round than this. But it goes south after that, being too one-dimensional. I After smoking pipes for many years; quitting; coming back, went looking for a latakia rich tobacco. While keeping the flavor and satisfaction in my smokes. 21.58. This is a lovely lat-bomb. But it really is a good tasting tobacco. In summary, this seems to be a Penzance lite. . I really like this one. I can't get over how smooth it is. Without risk of being accused of hyperbole, I can categorically say that, if I were forced to only smoke Pirate Kake for the rest of my life, I'd be absolutely fine with that. Well, I have to admit, Latakia and Turkish tobaccos smell, well, yeah maybe like the musky lather of a salted slave. Usually I do not think I would like such a heavy latakia blend but this is good. PS: I've rated it mild because nicotine-wise it has no perceptible kick.
